Author Salman Rushdie's suspected assailant has been identified as 24-year-old New Jersey resident Hadi Matar, who is now in police custody, according to New York State Police Troop Commander Major Eugene J. Staniszewski. Hadi Matar was allowed entry since he had a pass. At the occasion, he also declared his Lebanese ancestry. The author was stabbed numerous times, including in the neck and the abdomen. Furthermore, it is discovered that the assailant is an ally of Iran's fundamentalist groups.

Hadi Matar allegedly supported the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, which was established by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and which issued many fatwas against the author in 1989 for his book "The Satanic Verses."
