Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss face off at first public hustings for Tory members

30-07-2022 Sat 14:36

The candidates for British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, have stepped up their attempts to win over party supporters. The Conservative campaign headquarters conducted the first interview between Sunak and Truss in the northern English city of Leeds since the party will begin sending ballots to voters the following week.

The party's supporters questioned Sunak and Truss' policies in this interview. With the exception of the fact that he left his position as finance minister due to disagreements with Boris Johnson's economic ideas, Sunak said that his resignation was not intended to be a backhanded gesture.

Truss, his rival, has pledged to significantly reduce taxes once being elected prime minister. Sunak has the backing of MPs, but it appears that some party voters have a slight preference for Liz Truss.
