Andhra Minister's house set on fire amid violence over renaming district
On Tuesday, a crowd of enraged demonstrators in Andhra Pradesh's Amalapuram town set fire to the house of state Transport Minister P Viswarup over the proposed renaming of the newly constituted Konaseema district as B R Ambedkar Konaseema district. Viswarupu's office was also attacked, with furniture broken. A group of individuals who were protesting the proposed renaming of the newly constructed Konaseema district to BR Ambedkar Konaseema district were lathi-charged.
People attempting to stage a protest near the district Collector's office were also lathi-charged by police. A police van and a bus from an educational institution were also set on fire. Protesters also pelted stones at police officers, injuring some of them.
On April 4, the new Konaseema district was formed from the former East Godavari district.
