Supreme Court gives equal inheritance right to daughters
21-01-2022 Fri 19:08
The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that a male Hindu father who died without writing a will would be entitled to daughters to inherit the father's self-acquired and other possessions secured during the partition. The court further stated that such girls would be prioritised above other collateral members of the family, such as sons and daughters of the dead father's siblings. The case involved the Hindu Succession Act and the property rights of Hindu women and widows.
The decision came in response to an appeal from the Madras High Court, which had dismissed the daughters' partition claim. If there is no will, the woman will get inheritance rights on behalf of her husband, according to the court.
