The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded this year to journalists Maria Ressa of the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov of Russia "for their attempts to protect freedom of expression, which is a prerequisite for democracy and enduring peace." According to the Nobel committee, Mr Muratov has been recognised for protecting free expression in Russia under increasingly difficult conditions, whilst Ms Ressa co-founded Rappler.com and has been praised for exposing abuse of power and creeping authoritarianism in the Philippines. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the prize, one of the world's highest honours, on Friday in Oslo, Norway.
