Himalayan viagra, selling for Rs 20 lakh per kg, now placed in Red List

The world’s costliest fungus-Ophiocordyceps Sinensis-also known as ‘Himalayan Viagra’, has entered the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species. It sells in international markets for upwards of Rs 20 lakh per kg. The fungus is known for its aphrodisiac and rejuvenation properties. The IUCN list, released on July 9, has placed the fungus in the ‘vulnerable’ category. The inclusion in the Red List is going to impact hundreds of villagers of Uttarakhand state, who were dependent on collecting the fungus as their primary source of livelihood.
