Former Defence Minister George Fernandes passes away
Former Defence Minister in the Vajpayee government George Fernandes passed away on Tuesday morning after a prolonged illness at Max Hospital in Delhi. He was 88 and had been suffering from swine flu disease. His last stint as a Parliamentarian was as a Rajya Sabha member from 2009-2010. India defeated Pakistan during Kargil war when he was Defence Minister. Fernandes was a former Indian trade unionist, politician, journalist and agriculturist. He was also the founder of the Samata Party. George will be remembered for his contributions to Indian democracy.
