Former Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as new Governor of RBI. Shaktikanta Das is a member of the Finance Commission of India. Das was appointed for a tenure of 3 years, making him the 25th Governor of RBI. The decision was taken by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. The new appointment came after Urjit Patel quit the position citing personal reasons. The real reason reportedly he was not happy over Centre trying to curtail RBI’s autonomy. Patel’s term as RBI Governor was to end in September 2019.
