Following a Supreme Court directive on August 2, the Election Commission of India has withdrawn the none of the above (NOTA) option from ballot papers of the Rajya Sabha and the Legislative Council polls. NOTA option will continue to be implemented in the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies. The Election Commission has issued letters to all state chief electoral officers to follow the same. A three-judge bench comprising CJI Dipak Misra and justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud have come to observation that the NOTA option is applicable only for direct elections and not indirect elections such as the Rajya Sabha polls.
